Citizenship – Possible Ways to Acquire

Citizenship - Possible Ways to Acquire

By acquisition: For those who have a paternal figure in the entire line of descent until it reaches the applicant, or  the first woman of the descent line was born after 01/01/1969, it is possible to do the process and apply for Luxembourg citizenship by “acquisition ”. The process is done in a single phase, without the need for the applicant to go to Luxembourg and the certificate issued comes with the words: “possède la nationalité luxembourgeoise. For this modality there is no deadline to enter the order. The process can be done at any time. See on the page citizenship – documents to be submitted – process for acquisition the instructions for entering the application in this category.

By option-1: the Law gives the right to the applicant over 18 years old to enter the process in this category considering the descent through a maternal figure of up to 02 generations before, that is, when the mothers, born before 1969, or grandmothers are descendants and before them the whole line is paternal. For example: considering that it is the claimant’s grandmother who has passed on the offspring to the father or mother and before her the whole line is paternal, in this situation it is possible to apply for citizenship “by option-1” which is very similar to the “Recovery” of the extinct article 89 as the applicant will have to go to Luxembourg to personally apply for citizenship. For this modality there is no deadline to request. The process can be done at any time. See on the page citizenship – documents to be presented – process by option- 1   the instructions for entering the application in this category.

Note:

  • The above categories are the most common. There are other ways to acquire citizenship. For information, see the official website of Luxembourg: https://guichet.public.lu/fr/citoyens/citoyennete.html
  • For those who have a maternal figure in the line of descent from 03 or more generations before, and did not enter the first phase until December 2018, according to the extinct article 89 of the Law, it is no longer possible to do the process, even though they are descendants of a Luxembourg citizen.
  • For those who have a maternal figure in the line of descent from 03 or more generations before, and who entered the first phase until December 2018, according to the extinct article 89 of the Law, having the certificate of ancestry with the words: “est la descendante em ligne directe d’um aïeul qui possédait la nationalité luxembourgeoise em date du 1er javier 1900” they must plan to go to Luxembourg to personally request the recovery until December 2020. Whoever has this certificate and does not go to Luxembourg by the end of December 2020 will lose the right to become a citizen. See on the page  citizenship – documents to be submitted – second phase – recovery process   the instructions on how to enter the application in this category.
